Patient ReviewsAsk Catherine

This Week’s Question:

The Solution to Getting Great Patient Reviews

Dear Catherine,

I know patient reviews are important but I’m having trouble getting good ones. Of course, I have some patients who are criticizing my practice more than complimenting me so I need more 5-Star positive reviews. My staff doesn’t think we should ask for them since they feel that is not professional so how else can we get them?

Dr. O

Catherine’s Answer:

Hello Dr. O,

You are asking an important question since reviews have become EVERYTHING for a cosmetic practice. Here are recent stats you want to be aware of:

#1 – 72% of Consumers Trust Online Reviews As Much As Personal Recommendations. (Source: Search Engine Journal)

#2 – 90% of Customers Say Buying Decisions Are Influenced by Online Reviews (Customer Review Statistics)

#3 – Doctors are the SECOND most reviewed search group with restaurants being the first. (BrightLocal)

It’s time to take patient online reviews as seriously as you take your skills as a surgeon. What others say about you is infinitely more important than what you are saying about you on your Website and in your advertising.

How are your reviews? Not Sure? For starters, here are 4 ways to start managing your online reputation:

  1. Google YOU

Put your name on Google to see what information about you comes up. Pay special attention to how Google ranks the most popular review sites in our industry so you can prioritize your efforts.

The Solution to Getting Great Patient Reviews

  1. Create a Google profile

With a Google profile, you can manage the information–such as your bio, contact details, and other information about you–that people see. You can also link to other sites about you or created by you. For example, you can link to your website, YouTube channel, blog, online photos in Picasa, and other profiles such as Facebook and LinkedIn.

  1. Remove unwanted content and the associated search results

If you find content online–say, your telephone number or an embarrassing photo of you–that you don’t want to appear online, first determine whether you or someone else controls the content. For example, if the photo you want to hide is part of your Picasa account, you can simply change your photo visibility settings. If, however, the unwanted content resides on a site or page you don’t control, you usually need to ask the website owner to remove the information.

  1. Get notified when your personal data appears on the web

You might want to get notified if new information about you–like your name or email address–gets published online. The “Me on the Web” feature of your Google Dashboard can help you keep an eye on what’s out there about you. Or simply create “google alerts” to get email notifications any time Google finds new results about you and even the plastic surgery industry as well as your competitors.

Now, you want to make getting positive patient online reviews a top priority in your practice.
