Shawna R. Kleban, MD shares her career journey where she’s currently employed in a group practice but with autonomy to grow.
Hello, and welcome to “Beauty and the Biz,” where we’ll discuss the business and marketing side of plastic surgery.
As always, I’m your host, Catherine Maley, author of “Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying.” and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits.
Employed in Group Practice with Autonomy. The right employed position offers growth, support, and a life outside the practice.
Specifically, Dr. Shawna Kleban is a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing inside a multi-surgeon group with locations across the country. Additionally, she practices in Charlotte, Huntersville, and South Park, North Carolina, where she performs 100% aesthetic surgery.
Initially, Dr. Kleban joined this big organization as a fellow. Subsequently, she deliberately chose to remain a W-2 employed surgeon.
Naturally, you might wonder why she made this choice. Indeed, the right business model allows her to focus on surgery. Furthermore, it lets her participate in major decisions. Ultimately, it enables her to turn off her phone at the end of the day.

Notably, in this week’s “Beauty and the Biz” podcast, Dr. Kleban explains how being part of a large, physician-led organization gives her key advantages:
An established flow of leads and patients
Experienced operational and marketing support
Access to seasoned surgeons and business leaders
Greater work-life balance during this stage of her life
Consequently, for Dr. Kleban, it is the best of both worlds. Clearly, she gains the support of an employed position without feeling like a cog in a corporate machine.
To summarize, ownership is not the only path to a successful surgical career. Therefore, the right structure should support the practice and the life you actually want.
In conclusion, there is no single “right” practice model. However, there is a right model for your goals, lifestyle, and stage of growth. Meanwhile, my new Practice Growth Playbook shares the real-world lessons of more than 175 surgeons to help you make smarter business decisions without learning everything the hard way.
