Hello, and welcome to Beauty and the Biz where we’ll talk about going how Diana Flis, MD, went from Beverly Hills to setting up her practice in Jackson, MI. Additionally, we’ll discuss the general business and marketing side of plastic surgery.
As always, I’m your host, Catherine Maley, author of “Your Aesthetic Practice – What your patients are saying.” I’m also a consultant to plastic surgeons, to get them more patients and more profits.
Presenting today’s episode titled, “From Beverly Hills to Jackson, MI — with Diana M. Flis, MD.”
Obviously, opportunities oftentimes present themselves through networking. To be sure, you have a friend/colleague who knows someone or of an opportunity and it ends up being a life changing event that changes everything for you.
Notably, this is what happened to my latest “Beauty and the Biz” guest. Indeed, Dr. Diana Flis, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon from Jackson, MI. Of equal importance, a colleague mentioned a prestigious fellowship opportunity in Beverly Hills, CA.

In summary, Dr. Flis had a special interest in facelifts, so she accepted a 6-month fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Ben Talei, a well-known facial plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills.
Moreover, for a new surgeon, that kind of hands-on experience, learning the business, marketing and surgical techniques from a rising star surgeon is priceless.
Furthermore, she was able to take what she learned there and go back to her hometown in Michigan to practice for a large healthcare provider in the Southwest Detroit region called Henry Ford Medical Center where she has practiced for the past 6 years.
Chiefly, we talked about the trade-offs and benefits of that choice.
While many surgeons find immense satisfaction in the freedom of private practice, some recognize the advantages that come with the structure and support of a larger hospital environment, especially given their personal lifestyle and priorities.
In short, the advantages of working for a big medical organization can include access to cutting-edge technology, a steady stream of patients, no staff management, and the security of a consistent salary. Furthermore, it also allows you to work alongside other specialists to learn and grow from.
