Notably, Dr. Kaplan built a second business while continuing to operate.
Hello, and welcome to “Beauty and the Biz,” where we’ll discuss the business and marketing side of plastic surgery.
As always, I’m your host, Catherine Maley, author of “Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying.” and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits.
San Francisco, CA, plastic surgeon Jonathan Kaplan, MD, talks on how one surgeon stopped depending on surgery for every dollar.
To start, Dr. Jonathan Kaplan is a board-certified plastic surgeon in private practice in San Francisco. Presently, he still enjoys operating. However, he also saw a limit that every solo surgeon understands. Specifically, there are only so many hours he can spend in the OR.
Therefore, he built a business alongside his San Francisco plastic surgery practice. Initially, this began as price estimator software. Later, it evolved into GLP-1 weight loss software for online enrollment and subscriptions. Furthermore, Kaplan says the company now generates more than $30 million a year.

Overall, this “How One Surgeon Stopped Depending on Surgery for Every Dollar” episode covers his entire journey. Consequently, in our conversation, he explains several key concepts:
First, he details why he wanted revenue that did not depend on another surgical day.
Next, he discusses how he scaled without getting bogged down with more staff.
Additionally, he explains how a recurring service changes the cash flow scenario.
Finally, he reveals why making every patient visit the office can shrink the audience for that service.
Ultimately, you do not need to build a software company to take something away from this interview. Instead, you can examine which services require your personal time. Similarly, you can identify which treatments depend on expensive equipment. Then, you can determine which offerings could serve patients through a better process.
P.S. Unquestionably, you probably want your practice to grow. Specifically, you want growth without every additional dollar depending on your time. Fortunately, my new book, “Beauty and the Biz Practice Growth Playbook,” shares these valuable strategies. Moreover, it details the proven systems I have learned from successful surgeons.
