Pearls From Two Years in Practice — with Brandyn Dunn, MD

Hello, and welcome to Beauty and the Biz where we’ll talk about pearls from two years in practice with Brandyn Dunn, MD. Additionally, we’ll discuss the general business and marketing side of plastic surgery.

As always, I’m your host, Catherine Maley, author of “Your Aesthetic Practice – What your patients are saying.” I’m also a consultant to plastic surgeons, to get them more patients and more profits.

Presenting today’s episode titled, “Pearls From Two Years in Practice — with Brandyn Dunn, MD.”

Certainly, it’s really interesting to watch the new generation of plastic surgeons enter the marketplace.

However, from what I hear, they still graduate with little to no knowledge of the business and marketing side of plastic surgery which is insane.

Moreover, it seems they get the majority of this inside knowledge with a successful practice who can show them the ropes. That is, if they’re lucky enough to do a fellowship with them. However, what if you did an academic fellowship?

Specifically, this week’s video is an interview I did with Brandyn Dunn, MD. To be sure, he’s a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon in private practice in Newport Beach, CA. Ineed, he’s been in practice for the past two years.

Furthermore, Dr. Dunn grew up in Hawaii, did his residency in Irvine, CA. Afterwards, he then did an academic fellowship at the University of Kansas. Although he loved the people and disliked the winter.

Notably, we talked about how he joined a big skin cancer group in southern CA. Although he did lots of MOHS, he quickly became frustrated when he couldn’t care for his patients when seeing so many per day.

Additionally, he got advice from friends that were 2-15 years out in practice. Undoubtedly, they guided him to start his own practice. Then, he  left his then current practice amiably and still uses their OR.

Interestingly, he shares how side hustles helped and hurt his growth.

Moreover, he talked about how my podcast and others have helped fill in the blanks when it comes to building a solo practice in a very competitive area of the country.
