Learn how Dr. Nicholas Karter built his cosmetic practice without an existing patient pipeline.
Hello, and welcome to “Beauty and the Biz,” where we’ll discuss the business and marketing side of plastic surgery.
As always, I’m your host, Catherine Maley, author of “Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying.” and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits.
Nicholas Karter, MD, shares his roadmap on how we went from joining a group practice to going 100% cosmetic in private practice in only 3 Years.
Indeed, joining an established medical group often sounds like a shortcut to a full cosmetic schedule.
However, what happens when that group has no cosmetic patients to send you?
In fact, that exact scenario was the starting point for Dr. Nicholas Karter.
Specifically, this Connecticut facial plastic surgeon joined an ear, nose and throat group after completing his fellowship.
Although he enjoyed group financial security, he still had to build cosmetic demand himself.
Remarkably, he achieved his goal of becoming 100% Cosmetic in Only 3 Years.
First, he rebuilt an outdated website to attract digital traffic.
Next, he personally introduced himself to local med spa owners.
Gradually, he protected more of his weekly schedule for facial plastic surgery.
In turn, one dedicated day became two full days.
Then, two days expanded into three days.
Ultimately, he dropped general ENT work, followed by insurance and reconstructive care.

In addition, during our “Beauty and the Biz” podcast conversation, we discuss key takeaways:
First, learn how he built a cosmetic practice inside an ENT group.
Second, discover why a separate location and separate branding still did not solve the underlying fit.
Third, explore what he learned from a business CEO before going solo.
Finally, understand why his new practice grew faster than he anticipated.
Currently, he wonders whether he should have left the group sooner.
However, he recognizes that he may not have been ready to run the business back then.
Indeed, if your current setup feels comfortable but keeps pulling you away from the practice you want, his experience will give you plenty to think about.
P.S. Furthermore, is your practice growing in the direction you actually want?
Therefore, order your Practice Performance Audit today so we can identify gaps and prioritize what to improve first:
