One Patient At a Time Still Works — James Rough, MD

James Rough, MD, is a perfect example of why giving excellent care, one patient at a time, still works to successfully grow your practice.

Hello, and welcome to “Beauty and the Biz,” where we’ll discuss the business and marketing side of plastic surgery.

As always, I’m your host, Catherine Maley, author of “Your Aesthetic Practice – What Your Patients Are Saying.” and consultant to plastic surgeons, helping them get more patients and more profits.

One Patient At a Time Still Works — Dr. Rough shares how patient care, staff culture, and word-of-mouth drive his growth.

Specifically, in this week’s video, Dr. James Rough explains his practice-growth strategy. Furthermore, he is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in private practice in Tucson, Arizona. Clearly, he is not trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, he is building a boutique, concierge-style practice. Accordingly, the focus is on the patient experience and the relationship. Moreover, he values the long-term trust that comes from taking great care of one patient at a time.

Ultimately, that matters deeply in today’s competitive cosmetic marketplace. After all, it is easy to get distracted by several factors:

  • For example, you might worry about what the surgeon down the street is charging.

  • Additionally, you might focus on what device vendors are promising.

  • Similarly, you might watch what everyone else is posting on social media.

  • Furthermore, you might wonder whether you should add the next trendy treatment.

However, Dr. Rough made a great point. Eventually, you realize you are really in competition with yourself. Consequently, you compete with your own standards, outcomes, patient experience and team culture. Therefore, rather than comparing himself to the competition, he stays focused on improving his own patient experience, protocols and customer service processes.

Additionally, we talked about his wife’s role in the non-surgical side of the practice. Next, we discussed how surgical patients can become long-term aesthetic patients. Finally, we examined why hiring staff who naturally understand customer service is so important.

Indeed, cosmetic patients do not buy procedures. Rather, they buy confidence, trust, reassurance and the belief that you understand them.
